Host goes "non operational" due to NFS 4.1 storage domain becoming inaccessible

Issue

  • Host goes non operational, non-operational, NonOperational.

  • There are many zombie/defunct processes on this host. They are all ioprocess processes.

  • A dd command is hung in NFS kernel code.

  • The Storage Domain causing the non operational state is running NFS 4.1.

  • There are hung tasks reported in the messages file.

Environment

  • Red Hat Virtualization (RHV) 4.0, 4.1
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3, 7.4 hosts
  • NFS 4.1 Storage Domain
