A gfs2 filesystem fails to be frozen and repeats the log message "waiting for recovery before freeze" forever

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • The command gfs2_tool freeze <mountpoint> hangs or is stuck and the following message repeats continuously:

    Dec 18 14:10:02 node42 kernel: GFS2: fsid=mycluster:data01.1: waiting for recovery before freeze

  • When a VMware VM freezes a RHEL 7 gfs2 filesystem with open-vmtools the filesystem is never frozen and repeats the following message forever:

    Jul 24 19:02:29 node42 kernel: GFS2: fsid=cluster:share.2: waiting for recovery before freeze
    Jul 24 19:02:29 node42 kernel: GFS2: fsid=cluster:share.2: retrying..
