How to rescue an instance booted from volume (RHOSP 16.2 and prior)?

- How to use nova rescue for boot-from-volume instances?
- Nova rescue does not work for volume backed instances.
- Are there manual workaround steps to recover a corrupt boot from volume image?
Environment
- Red Hat OpenStack Platform 16.2 and prior
- For Red Hat OpenStack Platform 17.1 and newer releases it is supported to rescue volume-backed instances using API https://access.redhat.com/solutions/7071497.
