fence_scsi fails with "Unable to perform fence operation" in a RHEL 5 cluster

Issue

  • fence_scsi failed repeatedly with the message "Unable to perform fence operation"
Jul 26 00:44:29 node1 fenced[4519]: fencing node "node2"
Jul 26 00:44:30 node1 fenced[4519]: agent "fence_scsi" reports: version: 0.33 20070919 Unable to perform fence operation.
Jul 26 00:44:30 node1 fenced[4519]: fence "node2" failed
  • Cluster fencing kept failing and there seems to be lock placed on the shared file systems and none of the applications were able to access it.
  • Fencing on RH cluster doesn't seems to work with fence_scsi.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 with the High Availability Add On
  • One or more nodes configured to use fence_scsi
