Unable to mount CIFS share "wrong fs type" message

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Wrong filesystem type message shows up when trying to mount CIFS.

  • We've this Samba share that fails to mount with the following error:

[root@hostname ~]# mount /mnt/folder/
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //f.q.d.n/share,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
       need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
  • CIFS share fails to mount with below error:
root@hostname ~> mount //f.q.d.n/share /share
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //f.q.d.n/share,
       missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
