Why does syslogd listen on port udp:514 when -r is not specified?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • syslogd is binding to 0.0.0.0:514 even with -r is not used in /etc/sysconfig/syslog
  • When configuring i.e.
*.* @10.0.0.1

in /etc/syslog.conf syslogd starts to listen on port udp:514 while it should just send out messages to the remote host, why is that?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • package sysklogd, all versions
