Can not remove Logical Volume, message "Logical volume contains a filesystem in use" returned

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Removing/deactivating a logical volume whose overlaying filesystem was a submount for a private mount fails on RHEL 7.2 and later.
  • This behavior was not present in previous minor versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and is not present in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.8
  • Messages state that the logical volume has an open filesystem, but there are no filesystems mounted from the logical volume.

Environment

Observed On

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (post 7.1)
  • kernel-3.10.0-327.el7
  • lvm2-2.02.130-5.el7
  • device-mapper-1.02.107-5.el7
  • lvmetad status has no bearing on the logical volume behavior.
