LPD printers not responding in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • We periodically see the following error message in /var/log/cups/error_log:

W [23/Mar/2010:02:29:37 -0500] [Job 8104] Remote host did not respond with command status byte after 300 seconds!
    I [23/Mar/2010:02:29:37 -0500] [Job 8104] Backend returned status 1 (failed)

  • When the wave starts to print the labels, I saw that all the labels were printed, but the packing slip report didn't print all the sheets. I think it could be a delay in the printing queue.

  • Print delays are occurring in what seems to be random print queues.

  • The status for the printer is /usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd failed. What is wrong?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, 7, 8
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.3.7, 1.4.2, 1.6.3, 2.2.6
  • Printing to printers using the Line Printer Daemon (LPD) protocol
