NFS Server has random NFS failures, rpc.mountd process dead

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • NFS services stop abruptly
  • # service nfs status command shows rpc.mountd [pid xxxxx] is dead but subsys locked
  • Entry in /var/log/messages shows rpc.mountd[xxxxx]: couldn't open /var/lib/nfs/etab

Environment

Observed on

  • NFS server:
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.8 (Santiago)
    • kernel-2.6.32-642.6.2.el6.x86_64
    • nfs-utils-1.2.3-70.el6_8.2.x86_64
