Why does openais refuse to form a cluster and echoes 'FAILED TO RECEIVE' on RHEL5.4?

openaisdoes not form a cluster or disconnects when using RHEL 5.4.
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5 (with the High Availability Add on)
- openais versions earlier than openais-0.80.6-28.el5 (but some z-stream packages contain a fix)
