What is the recommended ext2,3,4 file system auto fsck interval on Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

By default, the mke2fs utility sets the max mount count before an e2fsck to a value between 20 and 39 (depending on the UUID). This causes unnecessarily long reboot times when this value expires, resulting in long outages. This is exacerbated by large filesystems, especially ones that are frequently mounted. This is not a problem for ext filesystems created by the Anaconda installer because Anaconda use tune2fs to disable it.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • ext2, ext3, or ext4 filesystem
