New virtual disks do not get detected by Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 on a VMware hypervisor

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

After presenting new disks to a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 guest on a VMware hypervisor these cannot be detected by the OS without a reboot. This applies to disks attached to an existing virtual scsi adapter. The rescan-scsi-bus.sh script even if used with the "-a" flag fails to detect the new disk. If a new virtual scsi adapter is used, disks are detected.

Environment

  • Observed on a VM running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.2, but the same information is expected to apply on all Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 releases.
  • VMware ESXi hypervisor
  • Both open-vm-tools and vmware-tools installed
