RTNETLINK answers: File exists error when doing ifup?

Issue

  • While doing ifup to an interface returns the below error.
# ifup ethX 
RTNETLINK answers: File exists 
  • Here is the relevant configuration files used.
# cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth2 
DEVICE=eth2 
ONBOOT=yes 
BOOTPROTO=static 
IPADDR=10.10.210.164 
NETMASK=255.255.255.0 
TYPE=Ethernet
  • Static routing configuration for eth2
# cat  /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/route-eth2 
10.10.210.0/24 via 10.10.210.256
