Why does a manual umount of certain autofs mounts causes subsequent remounts to fail?

Issue

  • After umounting an NFS file system that was mounted via autofs, it sometimes cannot be remounted via autofs.
  • A manual mount of the affected mount point(s) works fine.
  • Not all automounted NFS mount points are affected.
  • Only seen on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8, works ok on RHEL 5.6 and 6.3.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.8 [x86_64]
  • autofs-5.0.1-0.rc2.164.el5_8
  • kernel-2.6.18-308.4.1.el5
