After changing fabric switch paths, device-mapper-multipath does not fail over to new paths on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Issue

  • We have migrated ports to new ports, and performed a scsi rescan but the filesystem became read only after.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (All versions)
  • device-mapper-multipath managing paths
  • SAN-based storage providing multiple paths to a host
    • Attempting to change paths to LUNs to use different fabric switch ports by
      • adding new paths through new ports, then
      • removing old paths through old ports.
