RHEL6: vmtoolsd freezes filesystems then spawns child processes, which deadlocks trying to write process accounting file while exiting
Issue
The VM running under an ESX hypervisor was hung
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Seen with RHEL 6.8, probably others also affected
- process accounting (pacct) configured
- VMWare vmtoolsd freezing local filesystems
