The AMD Opteron 6000-series platform, codenamed "Magny-Cours", is supported as of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 with errata kernel 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5 (https://access.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2009:1670). This Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4.z errata release includes the minimal set of changes required for Red Hat hardware certification of the reference platforms. OEM systems that diverge significantly from the reference platform – in design, peripherals, or BIOS – may require Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 for certification. Please check Red Hat's Hardware Catalog at https://catalog.redhat.com/ for the certification status of specific OEM systems and models.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 will provide more complete support of the new Opteron 6000-series hardware. In addition, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 will take even greater advantage of the reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) features -- as well as the performance capabilities -- of the new hardware. Although some Opteron 6000-series systems are certified and supported with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 plus RHSA-2009-1670, Red Hat recommends using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 wherever possible in order to ensure an even better customer experience.
