Can I safely ignore "VMware vmmemctl driver: failed" mesasge in boot.log?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • I've got several RHEL 6.2 VMs with the OSP vmware tools installed (version 8.6.5 from http://packages.vmware.com/tools/esx/5.0u1/rhel6/x86_64/index.html)

  • I'm seeing an error on boot that the vmmemctl module is failing to load.

   VMware vmci driver: done
   VMware vmmemctl driver: failed
Starting VMware Tools guest operating system daemon: done
   VMware vsock driver: done
  • Attempting to start kdump returns:
No module vmmemctl found for kernel 2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64, aborting.
