libvirtd encounters a segmentation fault (segfault) during startup on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8

Issue

When the libvirtd service is started on a RHEL5.8 system it fails and produces a core file due a segfault. The /var/log/messages file contains the following error;

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.8
  • libvirt-0.8.2-25.el5
