RHEL5/RHEL6: The ipmitool command returns false power-off status.

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • The impitool command that queries the power status of a normally operating server sometimes reports false power-off status:
# ipmitool -U [user-ID] -E -H [IP-address] chassis power status
> [...]
> "Chassis Power is off".
  • When the response to the IPMI packets over LAN from the server becomes slow and the transmission of IPMI packets from ipmitool is retrived, this problem seems to occur easily.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.6, 5.7 and 5.8
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, minor release <6.5 (potentially affected)
  • packages OpenIPMI-*2.0.16-11.el5 (for RHEL5)
