KVM guest causes 100% CPU usage on system with AMD processor

Issue

A KVM guest that is itself not heavily loaded is causing nearly full CPU use in a KVM host environment that uses an AMD CPU. The issue is not reproducible when using a similar guest in a KVM host environment that uses an Intel CPU.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4

  • KVM virtualisation

  • AMD CPU with hardware virtualisation support (svm processor flag).
  • KVM guest with more than one virtual CPU (vCPU).
