RHDS WARNING: userRoot: entry cache size is less than db size

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

This morning we had a Production outage wherein our users were unable to authenticate to RHDS. A restart of the service immediately resolved the issue, but we would like to understand what caused it.

I do see this message in the log file "/var/log/dirsrv/slapd-t2rgrds701/errros" and I would like to understand it better.

WARNING: userRoot: entry cache size 10485760B is less than db size 463101952B; We recommend to increase the entry cache size nsslapd-cachememsize

It looks like something we need to tune. My suspicion is it might have something to do with why the DirSrv was not responding to LDAP queries this morning.
