ifdown/ifup does not work on a network interface

Issue

  • ifdown eth0 fails bring down the interface
  • ifup eth0 fails to bring up the interface

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • Network scripts are in use (/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*)
