Is there any way to configure a system to allow non-root users access to dmidecode?
Issue
- On a stock RHEL system, running
dmidecode
as a non-root user returns a "/dev/mem: Permission denied
" error. Opening up permissions on /dev/mem (viachmod
orsetfacl
) doesn't allow non-root users to rundmidecode
; instead, it changes the above error to "/dev/mem: Operation not permitted
". Why? Is there any way around this?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
