How to re-purpose a large & unused /home filesystem for something else?

Issue

When the system was installed, a separate logical volume was created for the filesystem mounted at /home. It has since been decided that all of this free space needs to be used for a different purpose since /home is barely used. How can we rename/remount the home filesystem somewhere else?
