After creating and formatting a partition I still can not mount it. What could be wrong?

Issue

  • While trying to mount a filesystem with mount -t ext3 <device> <mount point> the the following error is written to the terminal:

    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on,
        or too many mounted file systems
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise linux 4
  • Filesystem ext3
