'mdadm -Es' does not show newly created devices and they're not being assembled on boot in RHEL when /etc/mdadm.conf contains a DEVICE line

Issue

  • We have created new md's, but not able to find new entries after doing mdadm -Es . We are able to find the new md's in /proc/mdstat.
  • Devices are not showing up in mdadm -Es or being assembled on boot, but they're listed in /proc/mdstat

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, or 7
  • MD RAID
  • /etc/mdadm.conf contains a DEVICE line with a value other than partitions
