System fails to boot, "/dev/sda1 is mounted. e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting" message appears for the '/boot' partition.

Issue

  • System fails to boot after upgrading the kernel and other packages. Following message was seen on the console for the /boot partition before asking "Give root password for maintenance". /boot is on internal disk /dev/sda.
/dev/sda1 is mounted. 
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting
