RHEL: NIC link flaps when unterminated cable is connected

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • We have a number of servers that are identical in HW (HP DL360p Gen8) and SW (RHEL 6.5).
  • We noticed the issue in few servers only although all servers have same patch level and configurations.
  • Every server is configured with network Bonding and each bond has dual connection to network switches.
  • Each server has two network cards with dual ports each.
  • Servers are connected to Cisco switches via Cisco DAC cables (not Fiber cables)
  • During normal conditions, the network seems working fine with no issue.
  • The Issue that was reported in this support case was discovered while doing network resiliency test where we simulate network failure in one slave interface at a time and check the behavior.
  • We simulated network failure through multiple scenarios:
1 ---When disconnecting the the network cable from the server side --> no issue.
2 ---When disconnecting the the network cable from the switch side
(keeping it connected from server side) --> issue appeared in some servers only.
When reconnect the cable back, the network operates normally. In the servers that
have this behavior, within the same network card, one port is ok and the other have issue.

Environment

  • Red Hat enterprise Linux 6
  • Solarflare SFC9020 NIC
  • Bonding driver
  • Cisco DAC cables
