Could the rrdtool package split into sub-components?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The rrdtool-1.3.8-6.el6 package provided in the RHEL 6 channels currently provides the rrdcgi, rrdtool and rrdupdate binaries (amongst others). The package depends on a large number of dependencies however.

  • Could the rrdtool package be split to provide the basic database tools in one package and separate out the graph drawing functionality to another package?

  • This would allow rrdtool to be used to log system monitoring statistics, for example, without requiring cairo, fontconfig, freetype, libX11 and pixman (amongst others). This would allow systems to log data to the rrdtool databases with a smaller (and therefore more secure) package list.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.2
  • rrdtool-1.3.8-6.el6
