Why 'tar' command gives error "tar: /dev/st0: Cannot read: Cannot allocate memory" when reading contents of tape ?

Issue

  • When reading the contents of tape, with tar -t /dev/st0 gets error message, tar: /dev/st0: Cannot read: Cannot allocate memory
[root@example dev]# tar tvf /dev/st0         
tar: /dev/st0: Cannot read: Cannot allocate memory
tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
[root@example dev]
