fence_vmware_soap/fence_vmware_rest fails with error 'Unable to connect/login to fencing device' in a RHEL High Availability cluster

Issue

  • The fence_vmware_soap or fence_vmware_rest agent is failing with following error message:

    # fence_vmware_soap -a 192.168.0.10 -l user1 -p password -o list -z
    No handlers could be found for logger "suds.client"
    Unable to connect/login to fencing device
    

    But we are able to login to the vCenter web interace using the same username and password.

  • The following failure log event is reported under /var/log/messages:

    Jun 16 01:32:37 node01 fence_vmware_soap: Unable to connect/login to fencing device
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 with the High Availability Add On
  • One or more VMware virtual machines operating as a cluster node
  • Using fence_vmware_soap or fence_vmware_rest as the fence/agent for one or more nodes
