Excessive network traffic between an ActiveMQ broker and its synchronous clients

Issue

Investigation of network traffic shows a volume of data exchanged between the broker and its clients that is many times greater than the value estimated by multiplying the average messages size with the number of messages per second. However, the application is behaving as expected, with all messages being delivered without failures or re-tries.
