RHEL6: NFS4 state manager thread soft lockups with krb5 mounts

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

Sep 11 22:35:18 foobar kernel: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#17 stuck for 67s! [172.19.0.98-man:12251]
  • We have a cluster of 4 Red Hat 6.5 (fully patched) machines that accept remote logins with home directories. We are mounting home directories from a NFSv4 OmniOS server with sec=krb5p, and even tried with a RHEL6.5 NFS server with krb5. Each one of the 4 RHEL 6.5 boxes records these soft lockups at about the same time when they start happening.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (NFS client)
    • seen on kernel 2.6.32-431.29.2.el6.x86_64, other kernels likely affected
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6 (NFS4 client)
    • kernels (2.6.32-504.*.el6) prior to kernel-2.6.32-504.16.2.el6
  • NFS server
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or OmniOS
  • NFS4
  • kerberos security on NFS mounts (krb5, or krb5p)
