Why is my x86_64 system is registering as an i386 system in Red Hat Network?

Limitation:
This has been found on an x86_64 system that has i386 packages installed on the system and may not be applicable for other architectures.
Symptom:
The system keeps registering on Red Hat Network (RHN) as an i386 machine eventhough it is a 64bit architecture machine.
