How to avoid the issue of BZ#1110264 that signaling external NMI fails to trigger system panic

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • If NMI watchdog is enabled, signaling external NMI fails to trigger system panic during the system booting even if kernel.unknown_nmi_panic=1.

  • For example, if system hangs at boot, we cannot use external NMI to make system panic to get crash dump due to this issue.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.0
  • kernel-3.10.0-123.el7.x86_64
  • Ivy Bridge processors
