RHEL Upgrade while Logical Volumes are unmounted

Posted on

I have the following plan for moving from RHEL 7 to RHEL 8:
(1) Try an upgrade with 'leapp'. If it works: case closed.
(2) If leapp fails: installation of RHEL 8 from scratch.

I plan to unmount volumes (and possibly deactivate and export volumes groups) not relevant for the upgrade process before step (1).

Is this a safe way for keeping those volumes "out of the war zone" during the upgrade ?
Will file permissions and user/group associations be back after the upgrade (or new installation) if I use the same /etc/passwd and /etc/group files for the new system ?

And last questions: Is it even necessary to be so cautious or will mounting the volume on the new system just do it?
(I understand that volume group data is stored on the disks which are part of the volume group).
