bash: PROMPT_COMMAND: readonly variable message after upgrading to RHEL 8.2

Posted on

After using "in-place upgrade" to upgrade a RHEL7.8 server to RHEL8.2, all users (including root) are presented with this message every time they ssh (via a terminal) into the server:

bash: PROMPT_COMMAND: readonly variable

It appears directly before the user is presented with their prompt.

I've search online discussion groups but none really describe what is going on with this particular scenario and why it has only started appearing after upgrading to RHEL8.
We have started using this RHEL8 server as a template and of course, every new build sees this message happening on login.
Is anyone able to describe why it might have started happening and how I might stop it.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
