Yum update conflicts in install of mesa-filesystem with nvidia.

Latest response

Hello,

I recently purchased a machine from dell with Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation 7.3.

Since not everything in the system is up-to-date, I tried to update 1063 packages with "yum update," and got an error below.

Transaction check error:
file /usr/lib64/vdpau from install of mesa-filesystem-17.2.3-8.20171019.el7.x86_64 conflicts with file from package nvidia-375.20-x86_64.el7.1.x86_64

Other packages have no conflict. I forced update excluding mesa-filesystem, but system ended up with a failure, so I just ran factory reset to start from scratch.

I also took a search about this issue and found some related discussions (https://access.redhat.com/discussions/3101441), but there are no same issue with me. I am pretty new to rhel so cannot make sure this solution would work for me or not.

Could anybody help me go through this problem?

Hi Byungjin,

I thought some time about what could be the best advice to give you ... unfortunately the problem is not easy to solve for a new user. The operating system is two versions behind the latest stable edition, which currently is RHEL 7.5 and the proprietary NVIDIA drivers are quite outdated as well. An upgrade would be possible when you uninstall all NVIDIA related (proprietary) drivers and software, but chances are that you may experience issues nevertheless.

The most easy way would be to download the RHEL 7.5 DVD ISO, create a bootable installation medium and install the system from scratch. All (open source) drivers are included, so if you don't have to do some demanding 3D work, you don't need the proprietary drivers. If you need them, follow the instructions I have provided in the discussion thread you mentioned. Feel free to ask me if you didn't understand something or need further assistance. :)

Christian

Hi, Christian,

Thank you for your swift reply. I will try one of your suggestion. Will come back to you if I encounter any problem.

Thanks!

You're welcome Byungjin, hope that everything works properly and ... I wish you good luck ! :)

Christian

Hi Byungjin,

If you decide to perform a fresh installation of RHEL and not to start over with the DELL factory image, this might be relevant :
Knowledgebase article -> Kernel requirements for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 on Dell Precision laptops with Kaby Lake CPU
Knowledgebase article -> Kernel requirements for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 on Dell Precision laptops with Coffee Lake CPU
Even though the DELL Precision series specifically is mentioned, this is applicable for other machines with these CPUs as well.

Hi Christian,

Fortunately, it looks like the first approach worked well so far. I am commenting here to let the future user coming from the search know what I have done.

  • The spec: Dell workstation + Redhat enterprise linux 7.3 + nvidia 375.20 + 1063 pkgs to be updated

  • The goal: update all packages including Rhel to 7.5, nvidia to 390.20

Download up-to-date nvidia driver here.

To see the conflicting pkg name (Nvidia_~~~),

  • yum update

Go to command line mode to uninstall the graphic driver.

  • init 3

Remove the pkg.

  • yum remove (Nvidia_~~~)

Update all

  • yum update <- a couple of failures happened here but it seems minor.

Install newer Nvidia driver

  • sudo sh (downloaded Nvidia driver)

Go back to GUI mode

  • init 5

Thank you for your help!

Cool Byungjin, that's great news - I'm glad that I could help you and that you achieved your goal. :)

Regards,
Chistian
