even though I am root, I am unable to change the directory permissions

Hi Masood,

The first zero means that there are no files in that directory. Regarding the permissions - why can't you change the permissions ?
Maybe the directory needs special ACL attributes : sudo setfacl -R -m u:<your-user-name>:rwx /path-to-directory

Okay Masood, but then ls -l should show something else than 0 files and folders - right ? Example from my setup :

Hi Masood,

You executed the command incompletely (you forgot rwx) and with root instead of your user name.
Also, the path to the data directory is /infa_shared/imatica/cas_data ... please try it again this way :
sudo setfacl -R -m u:<your-user-name>:rwx /infa_shared/imatica/cas_data

Hi Masood,

It is still wrong, it is not : setfacl -R -m u:root:rwx /infa_shared/imatica/cas_data/data
Instead : sudo setfacl -R -m u:<your-user-name>:rwx /infa_shared/imatica/cas_data

Also, is the disk or the partition formatted with a non native linux file system (like ext4) ?
When the disk or the partition is formatted with ntfs for example, setfacl does not work.

same result when used with user account name instead of root I am root. i tried with imatusr - may be this is the application user account name

selected a random file inside that directory and I see this

Hi Masood,

The first command failed because of the full stop you put at the end; regarding "Operation not supported" :
As I said before, when the disk or the partition is formatted with ntfs for example, setfacl does not work.
I am not sure what's going on here ... is the system user the owner of that data directory or someone else ?

Well, I don't know - CIFS might be the culprit - You can try to change the owner of the data directory.
Maybe you are able to change the permissions afterwards, not sure though, I never worked with CIFS.

Whatever the output of 'ls -l' is a file or a folder, the second column means the number of hard links for the file or folder. But for CIFS, Linux could not measure how much links for it. In order to change the CIFS permission, you could try to change the permission when mouting the CIFS folder, like "mount -t cifs -o username=,password=,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 //WIN_PC_IP/ /mnt"

Hi Masood,

First, regarding the error 'Operation not supported setfacl', it is mostly because the 'acl' feature is not supported on the respective file system or not enabled. So, what I'd do is to run the mount command straightway and check out if acl shows up there, otherwise, in case of ext3/4 file systems, I could run "tune2fs" command (example: tune2fs -l /dev/sda1 | grep "Default mount option") which would show if it is mounted with 'acl' attribute. Otherwise, remount it with acl and it to fstab entry.

Second point is that since it is network file system 'cifs', check out the KB articles that 'Bo Liu' pointed out and try to set directory permissions while mounting.

Just an update for you all The directory is on a mount point which comes(shared) from a windows system (cifs file system is a windows file system) we cannot change the dir perms from unix so - the task has been shofted to windows team :)
