Red Hat Enterprise Linux v7.1 *Desktop* Version?

Latest response

Hi - I'm looking for Red Hat Enterprise Linux v7.1, the Desktop version ISO. I'm a little confused about the different versions. The best I can tell is that, for RHEL 7.1, there is a "Server" version and a "Workstation" version and that "Workstation" and "Desktop" are synonymous.

The problem I'm having is that I can only find a download for the server version:

https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/69/ver=/rhel---7/7.1/x86_64/product-software

^Note that on that page RHEL 7.1 Boot ISO is named rhel-server-7.1-x86_64-dvd.iso. I believe I would want rhel-workstation-7.1-x86_64-dvd.iso or rhel-desktop-7.1-x86_64-dvd.iso, however, I cannot seem to find either anywhere.

Can someone please assist?

Thanks,
Terence

Hi Terence, do you have a subscription to both server and workstation? When you go to the download page you found, are you able to switch using the drop-down menu from server to workstation?

Another question, some who post here have a "Red Hat Developer's Suite" which is something from developers.redhat.com for ... developers who fit the use and agreement for developer's work - and they can get a no-charge edition of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server (not workstation). They mention someplace at developers.redhat.com that if someone really wants something like a workstation, they can install "Server with GUI" with the server edition of Red Hat Linux. Is that your case by chance?

If you do have a subscription to Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation and do not see it in your list of available product downloads, call Red Hat Customer Service to have them sort it out for you.

Now the difference between Workstation and Desktop has to do with "scalability" and for further details see this link https://access.redhat.com/articles/911363 for a side-by-side comparison.

Hope this helps, if you need more info, or what I posted here isn't clear, come back and ask away, someone will most likely chime in.

RJ

RJ - Thanks for the response. I do not have a subscription to either server or workstation. I'm a software engineer wanting to install Red Hat Desktop v 7.1 for development purposes. I'm told by a colleague that the Desktop version is what I want to install for our development purposes.

When I go to the download page the list of Red Hat Enterprise Linux "product variants" only includes "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server", "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server - Extended Update Support" and some other options (e.g. "Beta", "Atomic Host", etc) but no "Workstation" or "Desktop" variants.

It's not very clear to me how "Server w/ GUI" differs from "Desktop" or "Workstation". Is there a document somewhere that explains this?

Hi Terence,

"Server with GUI" is an option which you can select during the installation process of the RHEL Server edition.
It is a basic GNOME desktop environment getting installed on top of the server with some applications and tools.

Desktop and Workstation are exactly what the name says - a Linux Desktop / Workstation edition, coming with many applications and tools preinstalled. What may confuse though is the fact that the Server edition is the most complete offering.

Christian

Additionally, looking at this Red Hat article, it appears that "Desktop" and "Client" are one and the same. Is this correct?

So, there are three distinct variants: "Dekstop/Client", "Workstation" and "Server"? Am I understanding this correctly?

Hi Terence,

Yes, you understood it correctly, there are three RHEL editions (variants) available : Desktop / Server / Workstation
The differences between the RHEL Desktop and Workstation edition are explained in the article you've mentioned. :)

Christian - Thanks for the confirmation. So, next question: Where can I download an ISO for RHEL Desktop v7.1?

Hi Terence,

Good question ... if you have a valid desktop subscription, it should be offered in the download link RJ provided.
And as he said, if you have that subscription and it is not offered, then you should contact Customer Support. :)

Christian

Hi Terence,

Is there some reason that you are selecting RHEL 7.1? There have been lots of security issues and other bugs fixed since then? RHEL 7.4 is the latest released version. RHEL 7.5 is in Beta.

Marc

Hi Marc,

This is what I generally recommend too : always use the latest stable RHEL version being available. Well, the other day I tried to help someone who is running an older minor point release as well and I was told that his customer insisted on running this specific version ... right because something running on top would require exactly that version. :)

Christian

Hi Marc -Thanks for the heads up. I'll take a look at the differences between versions.

Hi Terence,

As you are interested in using the desktop edition : one of the biggest differences besides many improvements under the hood (you can find everything in the release notes) is the 'jump' from the GNOME 3.14 to the GNOME 3.22 DE. :)

Christian

Terence,

I mentioned along with Christian that you can get a developer's no-cost edition of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and why not try version 7.4? Or at least when your'e done, attempt to take your work to the most current edition. It seems from what you say that your work fits with development work for no-cost Red Hat Linux Server developers.redhat.com
