RHEL7 Virtual Template

Latest response

I had only recently discovered 'sys-unconfig' on RHEL6 and attempted to use it on RHEL7 to create a VM template in VMware only to find that it does not work in RHEL7. I then found https://access.redhat.com/solutions/198693 which directs to install and enable firstboot-graphical and initial-setup-graphical. It turns out that these services only run when the system has a full GUI and X-windows system installed.

What I want is to be able to clone a vm and be prompted for all hostname and networking information before even having to (or being able to) log into the system but the server will be a basic, commandline-only, system. I also found https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1194423 (cloud-init) but this seems to be a bit more functional with RHEV. For VMware it directs to create an ISO image with the desired configurations on it. This seems to be a fair amount of work depending how many unique systems I need to stand up.

Does anyone have any other strategies to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

Nobody?

as far as I'm aware, there isn't a script or program that facilitates this... Cloud-init does this for all cloud deployments and with the required setup and/or something like a Config-Drive would be of another option to you.

Additionally you could look at the following links:
