Using MacOSX to attach to RHEL7 via GDM

Latest response

I'm upgrading some servers from RHEL 4 and 5 to RHEL 7, and am having problems connecting to GDM from my Mac.

On the Mac, I used to do

Xnest :screen-num -query hostname

and I'd get an X11 session to log in to.

MoboXterm on the PC works fine with RHEL7 - once I drilled the right holes in the firewall.

Anyone know what secret sauce is needed to get past the

Dear Verne,

Such an upgrade path is unfortunately generally unsupported because the system is apt to end up in a state where your old configuration files are not digestible by the newer versions of the software. It's recommended that you perform a clean installation of RHEL 7. If you have RHEL 6, though, you can try the Preupgrade Assistant, which is designed exactly for these migration attempts. More info at https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Migration_Planning_Guide/chap-Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux-Migration_Planning_Guide-Upgrade_Tools.html.

Anyway, is there anything interesting in /var/log/gdm/* or /var/log/Xorg.0.log? An error message indicating a compatibility issue, that is.

I suspect that RHEL7 is working just fine - I'm just trying to determine what flags are needed on MacOS X 10.10.2 (or more specifically XQuartz 2.7.7's Xnest) to be compatible with a xdmcp session with RHEL7.

OK, then I'm afraid I won't be able to help. If no one else replies, please contact Red Hat Support.
