Why does installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 using NFS over gigabit ethernet sometimes fail?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5's installer, anaconda, defaults to using NFS over UDP. The high speed of gigabit (and faster) networks exposes a design flaw in NFS over UDP. UDP uses a 16 bit packet ID which on a high-speed network can wrap during the possible lifetime of a packet. There are two work-arounds to this problem:
