Why does the MetaMatrix Server installation fail without any error messages?

Symptom

After executing the installation binary and seeing "Initializing InstallShield Wizard.", the installation exits to the command prompt (or the GUI window is closed) but no error message is displayed. If the installation binary was started using the
-is:log
