It is often useful to get a fuller understanding of how a process consumes processor time. Knowing which sections of code are computationally intensive can show whether the code is having additional overhead due to some unexpected condition or that some sections of code are inefficient. The perf and OProfile tools can collect samples to show where the processors spend time.
