How do I reset the RX and TX bytes without losing network connection?

In ifconfig -a output, RX and TX bytes get reported. It might be easier to troubleshoot a networking problem if those counters were able to be reset. It is possible to reset those counters, even if it is not acceptable to lose your network connection for the next command.
