Are the "user friendly names" used with device-mapper-multipath persistent, or do they change?

Device names for multipathed devices created by device-mapper-multipath can be made in one of two ways. By default, they are derived from the WWID of the underlying disk. These names are obviously persistent, but they are difficult to work with, as seen below:
