Can I run Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation as a server?

Can a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Desktop or Workstation product be installed and supported as a server?

  • Desktop/Workstation variants

Resolution

The primary use and support case for installing RHEL Desktop or Workstation is in a "single user" environment. This use case expects that the system is not providing any services (network or otherwise), except to the single user who is typically working from a directly connected keyboard and display. Red Hat does not support any critical/production outage issues on RHEL Desktop or Workstation if it is being used as a production server. However, Standard support will be provided when RHEL Desktop or Workstation is used as a server in a single user test environment.

Example: A single user may test apache and web content, but cannot use Workstation to deploy a production Web server. This would not be supported by Red Hat.

The RHEL product provides the best stability and performance on a certified platforms. Please refer to the Red Hat Hardware Catalog for information on specific Laptops and Desktops supported for use with RHEL Desktop and Workstation products.
