Why am I seeing a warning about an unknown PCH with my Intel Kabylake processor equipped system?

Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Update 3
  • Intel Kabylake processor equipped systems.

Issue

  • When booting Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 Update 3 with kernels prior to kernel-3.10.0-514.6.1.el7 on a Kabylake processor equipped system, a warning similar to the following is witnessed in the boot messages
Unknown Intel PCH (0xa149) detected.
Warning: Intel Kabylake processor with unknown PCH – this hardware has not undergone testing by Red Hat and might not be certified. Please consult https://hardware.redhat.com for certified hardware.

Resolution

Previously, a Kabylake system with a Sunrise Point Platform Controller Hub (PCH) with a PCI device ID of 0xA149, incorrectly showed the warning message. Update RHSA-2017-0086 kernel-3.10.0-514.6.1.el7 fixes the underlying source code to properly recognize this PCH. As a result, the operating system now boots without displaying the warning messages.
